Stage Shows Coming and Going
Get your theatre fix with our weekly roundup of shows.
If you have an evening or two free this week, why not check out some plays before they leave Toronto theatres for good…or get a jumpstart on the hottest new shows of the season?
Altar Boyz, the hit Off-Broadway musical, received its Toronto premiere courtesy of Angelwalk Theatre, a new, not-for-profit company. Following the last concert of a fictitious Christian boy band, the musical comedy satirizes boy bands and the popularity of Christian-themed music. And who knew? There’s even a Jewish member of the Altar Boyz named Abraham. The production received great reviews and has been extended until Oct. 18. www.angelwalk.ca
Your last chance to see Soulpepper’s contemporary rendition of Antigoneis Oct. 17. In the play, Oedipus’s daughter Antigone risks her life and breaks state law to honour her slain brother with a proper burial. www.soulpepper.ca
Finally, Theodore Bike’s eight-show run of his one-man production Sholom Aleichem: Laughter Through Tears wraps up on Oct. 18. www.hgjewishtheatre.com
As for shows arriving, we were intrigued by DVxT Theatre’s twist on the Henry James classic The Turn of the Screw. Starring Christine Horne (The Stone Angel) as the governess and Clinton Walker in all other roles, the story is celebrated for its psychological complexity as it follows a young governess in her quest to save her charges from ghostly possession – unless, of course, it’s all in her head. This production takes place in the Campbell House Museum and audiences get to travel through all three levels as the story progresses. The Turn of the Screw starts Oct. 16. www.dvxt.com
The Nightingale & Other Short Fables, a series of short works by Igor Stravinsky, gets its world premiere with the Canadian Opera Company on Oct. 17. In a unique twist, the musicians perform on stage while the orchestra pit, where the actors perform, is filled with water. www.coc.ca
