“The Girls of Room 28” tells the story of how ten women – now mothers and grandmothers – survived the Theresienstadt internment camp, near Prague, on their way to Auschwitz.

The Jews that were deported to Theresienstadt, from countries all around Europe, were very much aware of the fate that awaited them. They quickly realized that young people had the best chance of surviving, so the priority was to keep them alive.

Adolescents were housed separately in barracks (where they had a better chance of staying healthy). Young counselors, who had been teachers and youth workers, made an array of amazing world-class artists, playwrights and musicians available to the young people – European Jews who were also on their way to Auschwitz.

The children produced art, poetry, and music under the guidance of these artists. Journalist Hannelore Brenner met ten of these child survivors, women from around the world who reunite every fall at a resort in the Czech Republic.
