One of television’s favourite comedies, The Office, is getting the Jewish treatment, with an Israeli version due out next spring.

The show, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, will be named Super Office and set in Yahud, near Tel Aviv. Israeli actor Dvir Benedek will play the David Brent character (originally portrayed by Ricky Gervais), renamed “Avi Meshulam,” and the show will also feature an Arab character described as “intelligent and gentle.”

Gervais joked, “I am thrilled and amazed that Israel are making The Office with local writers, directors and actors. I mean, who ever heard of Jewish entertainers?”

The Office has already been remade in France, Russia and the United States.

According to Haaretz, the 15 episodes, each 25 minutes long, will be written by Uzi Weill, who directed the hit program B’Tipul (remade on HBO as In Treatment), and directed by Eitan Tzur, whose past credits include Hahamishia Hakamerit.
