Artists Find a Haven in Montreal
Jewish painters exhibit depicts life in Montreal.
A Montreal based traveling exhibit showcasing Jewish painters is on display at the McCord museum, and features some of the city’s most prominent Jewish artists from the 1930-1948 era.
Seeking refuge from anti-Semitism in their home countries, the artists found a haven in Montreal, an epicentre of Jewish life in North America during that time. The paintings range from depictions of Montreal’s famous streets like Prince Arthur and Clark St., to nightlife scenes featuring pool halls and social clubs. Bleaker scenes are also prominent, with labour relations and poverty being frequent themes. Harry Meyerovitch’s Soup Kitchen and Ghitta Caiserman-Roth’s Strike depict the dire circumstances many Jews had to endure.
Paintings dealing with gender equality are also featured, most notably Muhlstock’s Female Worker, Rear View, which depicts a female worker as indistinguishable from a male counterpart. World War II and Nazi Germany are also explored by the artists, with some of Meyerovitch’s National Film Board posters from the WWII era on display.
The exhibit runs until May 2nd at the McCord Museum, 690 Sherbrooke St. W. For more details, call 514-398-7100 or visit www.mccord-museum.qc.ca.
