The Toronto International Film Festival will be facing a bit of a religious crisis this year as the ten-day festival runs directly into the Jewish High Holidays.

TIFF traditionally opens every year on the first Thursday after Labour Day and closes the following Saturday. That means that in 2010, TIFF’s opening night, Sept. 9, will occur on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and the Friday night will fall on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. The closing day of the festival, Sept. 18, coincides with Yom Kippur, which starts at sundown the night before.

Besides posing a problem for observant Jewish filmgoers, this means that many of the festival’s heavyweight supporters, who are Jewish, may be missing from events, as well as industry people, agents, publicists, and producers on these four days that bookend the festival.
