With the biannual Ashkenaz Festival coming up in a few months, the Ashkenaz Foundation is building excitement with two unique film events:

In partnership with the Toronto Jewish Film Festival, Ashkenaz is presenting The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground on Thurs. Apr. 22, 8 p.m. at the Bloor Cinema. The film will be preceded by a special concert presentation with Klezmatics members Frank London, Lorin Sklamberg, and Lisa Gutkin, and followed by a Q&A with the musicians and the film director.

To purchase tickets ($20) visit www.tjff.com or call 416-967-1528.

In partnership with the Hot Docs Film Festival, Ashkenaz will also be presenting the North American premiere of The Socalled Movie on Sun. May 2, 9: 15 p.m. at the Bloor Cinema, and Tues. May. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at the ROM Theatre. Ashkenaz audiences will be familiar with Montreal’s “Yiddish hip-hop madman” Josh Dolgin (a.k.a. Socalled) from past events. Directed by Garry Beitel, the film offers a kaleidoscopic portrait composed of 18 entertaining short films capturing magical moments of creation, and globetrotting exploits from Montreal to Paris and Ukraine to New York.

To purchase tickets ($12) contact the Hot Docs Box office by phone at 416-637-5150or email boxoffice@hotdocs.ca.
