Director of Brad Pitt’s ‘Fury’ Apologizes For Filming Nazi War Scenes on Remembrance Day
David Ayer and Sony Pictures have expressed their heartfelt apologies for any disrespect caused
On November 11th, many nations throughout the world honor the millions of veterans, both past and present, that have risked their lives to fight for their country. While ceremonies were being held internationally, Sony Pictures decided to continue filming their upcoming Brad Pitt-starring feature ‘Fury’. That wouldn’t be the biggest deal normally… except the scene they choose to shoot on Remembrance Day featured extras fighting in Nazi uniforms.
Filmed in an Oxfordshire village, locals were shocked and angry to hear pre-dawn explosions and see dozens of actors wearing soldiers uniforms with Nazi symbols.
‘Fury’ director, David Ayer, expressed his “heartfelt apologies for any disrespect caused” and Sony also issued a statement saying they “deeply regret any misunderstandings caused.”
Ayer followed up with a second message on Twitter, writing “I am a veteran myself. It is an honor to film here in the UK,” with an accompanying image of a Veterans Day ceremony being held at Arlington Cemetery in the United States.
Even an extra from the film chimed in, saying “This was grotesquely disrespectful and offensive. I can’t believe I wore an SS uniform on Remembrance Sunday.”
Although Ayers and Sony are apologizing now, after the fact, the filmmakers rejected a plea to suspend their operations on Remembrance Day, according to the Daily Mirror.
“I’m astonished producers would not consider it to be inappropriate to film such scenes on Remembrance Sunday,” said Shadow Defense Minister, Kevan Jones.
“It is outrageous appeals from locals to reconsider plans to film on such an occasion were ignored.”
‘Fury’, starring Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, and Jason Isaacs, is expected to hit theatres next October.
