‘Reverence: A Documentary Short on Custom Yarmulkes’ has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $6,000.
Directed by Collin Kornfeind, ‘Reverence’ will explore “the phenomenon of custom and branded yarmulkes in Jewish-American communities.”
Kornfeind, along with meaningless Films and Paper Plate Media, want to discover “the meaning and context behind branded yarmulkes and the concept of reverence.”
The project seeks to answer the question, “What does it mean to be Jewish in the modern world?” With yarmulkes depicting images of Batman, Homer Simpson, or sports team logos, does it affect Jewish culture and religion on a larger scale?
“We will interview religious and child development specialists, scholars, heads of religious institutions and yarmulke manufacturers to explore the societal and religious norms that these kippahs may challenge, focusing on the notion of “fitting in” and “standing out” within the Reform and Conservative Jewish community. These kippahs experiment with the idea of modern worship in the Jewish community while reflecting the nearly universal experience of teenage angst,” the Kickstarter page explains.
Backers of the project can receive anything from a DVD when the film is completed to a producer’s credit… and, of course, a custom yarmulke.
As of publication, the Kickstarter page has raised $1,415 of its $6,000 goal. To find out more info or donate, click here.
