On Thursday the 40 contenders for the annual Polaris Music Prize were announced at Calgary’s National Music Centre. The award, which honors the best Canadian album of the previous year, will see Toronto-born rapper Drake pitted against Arcade Fire, The Cowboy Junkies, Owen Pallett and many others.
The Polaris Music Prize, selected by a jury of journalists, bloggers and broadcasters, awards $30,000 to the best overall Canadian album, regardless of genre or sales numbers.
This year’s long list sees many familiar faces including Drake, Shad, Bry Webb, Basia Bulat, and past winners Arcade Fire and Owen Pallett. Newcomers include Jessy Lanza, Tanya Tagaq, Thus Owls, and Cousins. Last year’s Polaris Music Prize went to experimental Montreal collective Godspeed You! Black emperor.
The list will be narrowed down to 10 and announced on July 15 in Toronto. The winner will be crowned on September 22nd at a gala at the Carlu, also in Toronto.
