Shalom Life is proud to present our first Jewish LGBTQ series. We asked 10 public figures (ranging from comedians and actors to children’s book authors and musicians) to complete the following sentence:

I am Jewish. I am Gay. I am _________________

In the blank space, each participant has placed a personality trait, hobby, profession, descriptive adjective, or an interesting tidbit of information that describes an element of their being. Additionally, they have personally written a paragraph explaining their choice and how that choice defines them.

Religion and sexuality are integral to our self-identification, but they define us just as much as our interests, personality, career choices, philanthropic work, and talents.

Day 7- Eva Price

I am Jewish. I am Gay. I Like to Sing in the Shower

First of all, the acoustics in my bathroom are amazing (porcelain tiles…just sayin’), and if I close my eyes the rushing water kind of sounds like an audience cheering me on. As a theatrical producer, I spend my days working to bring great performances to the stage. But come nighttime, when I’m washing off the anxiety of the day, I confess I like to crank the shower steam on full-blast and belt Mo-Town hits into a shampoo bottle (Oh, like you’ve never.) Normally, I think I have a decent singing voice. Not amazing, but good enough. And while it’s true the words “funky” and “diva” aren’t often used to describe me (at least not flatteringly), I swear I have soul in the shower. Just give me a full hot water tank, a good lather of Panteen Pro-V in my hair, and I can out-Aretha Aretha. If I have to walk around in life being labeled by a single “identity,” then I guess I’d choose “likes to sing in shower” because it’s this loud, imperfect, totally unselfconscious thing. Even if I’m not that way all the time, at least I get to become that person for fifteen minutes every night before bed. It’s not much, but I think you’ll find that it can be enough to get rid of those otherwise sleepless nights.
