Fifa President “Appalled” by Racist Chants Aimed at Mario Balotelli

On Sunday, an Italian football game between AC Milan and AS Roma was temporarily stopped after visiting Roma fans continuously screamed racist remarks at Milan’s Mario Balotelli.

Early in the second half, the referee decided to stop play in order to regain focus and hopefully get the situation under control.

AC Milan coach, Masimiliano Allegri, condemned Italian football culture, calling it backward. He also criticized the way in which the situation was handled, with warnings broadcast over the public address system.

“People should go to the stadium to see two teams battling each other on the pitch, not this sort of thing, it’s a place for the uncivilized,” he said.

“Above all, the culture in Italy is backward….tonight we had racism, laser beams flashed in the eyes of players and an interrupted match.”

“Stopping the game doesn’t work, it’s a happy medium and like all happy mediums, it doesn’t do anybody any good,” said Allegri.

At one point, while the Roma fans were making monkey noises at Balotelli, the athlete attempted to quiet them by signaling silence with a finger over his mouth. His efforts were completely ignored.

Allegri points out that although Balotelli is very strong, the racist comments affect his focus and performance.

“Balotelli was defeated this evening, he gave everything, but he is 22 and subjected more and more to racist chants and that doesn’t do him any good.”

Fifa President, Sepp Blatter, took to Twitter to reaffirm his commitment to tackling racism in football.

“Appalled to read about racist abuse in Serie A last night. Tackling this issue is complex, but we’re committed to action, not just words.”

Milan needs tin win at Siena to get third place and the Champions League play-off spot.

“We need to stay calm, prepare well and play the game in Siena,” Allegri continued.
