Caplansky's Delicatessen: The Perfect Place to Meet a Nice Jewish Sandwich
Shalom Life chats with head honcho Zane Caplansky on his Jewish roots, his trendy deli restaurant in the heart of downtown Toronto, and his new summer cocktail, the 'Jewmosa'

"Taking something you drink on Shabbat or Passover and doing something fun with it is the epitome of what we do here at Caplansky's."
"Also," he adds with a grin, "it goes great with our 'Jew it up' pins."
Of course he has those, I thought to myself. I then learned that the Caplansky's food truck sports the same motto.
To prolong my taste excursion, I order a famous Caplansky's smoked meat sandwich, on the fatty side. I sink my teeth into it, my taste buds oozing from the selection of mustards available, and from what many Torontonians, including the famed Blogto, argue is the best deli sandwich in the city, and look at the pin, before glancing at the other odes to our shared heritage around the restaurant.
A framed portrait of Caplansky's grandparents, several other photos of his family, a menu that includes matzoh ball soup, beef brisket, lox & cream cheese, and has a Star of David accompanying the 'Deli Classics' section - knish, kishke, chopped liver, sweet gefilte fish, a poster, which Caplansky proudly held up for me to see (see cover photo), that reads 'The Perfect place to meet a Nice Jewish Sandwich', and over half a dozen t-shirts for a baseball team Caplansky's sponsors, naturally named 'The Bad News Jews'.
On the back of the shirt, as well as on the shirts Caplansky's employees wear, it reads 'Kickin it Old Shul.'
"I think we really have fun with our Jewishness, we have a whole theme of Jew pride, and the 'Jewmosa' fits well into that," he says. "It also gives people who aren't Jewish a little taste of the Jewish life I grew up with at home."
"Jewish people have a lot to be proud of," he adds. "Especially when it comes to our food."
