BuzzFeed Dominates on Facebook
A new study shows that Buzzfeed is the most shared, liked, and talked about site on Facebook
BuzzFeed, the self proclaimed "media company for the social age," has been found to be leading on at least one social network, mind you, as the most important, and most-visited social network site in the world, it seems pretty significant to say the least.
On Thursday, NewsWhip released a study showing that the social sharing focused site was leading in terms of the most engagements on Facebook in August 2013. BuzzFeed had 15.9 million likes, comments, and shares, combined.
When the study was last performed in September of 2012, it had 'just' 2.4 million. The Huffington Post (which shares founders with BuzzFeed), CNN, BBC, and Upworthy rounded out the top five.
When it came to Twitter, BuzzFeed still performed admirably, placing sixth. "Real" (quotation marks used by NewsWhip) news sites tended to rank much higher here than on Facebook. The BBC took the top spot with over 2 million tweets, with Mashable, the New York Times, The Guardian, and CNN following.
Although the study showed a growth in social news sharing, it doesn’t seem to directy correlate to what is actually being read. The Daily Mail was found to be the most read news website worldwide, but was only eighth on Facebook, and sixth on Twitter.
Likewise, the study found that news articles aren’t necessarily what is being searched for on BuzzFeed and the Huffington Post. In August, the HuffPo’s most popular article was "23 Signs You’re Secretly An Introvert," with BuzzFeed’s popular 'listicles' remaining their biggest traffic generators - although some of its long-form pieces have gone viral as well.
As with most studies, not all of what NewsWhip collected makes perfect sense. It described some content networks as "particularly sprawling and hard to track," describing Yahoo as an example.
Now with all that out of the way, be sure to like, share, tweet, tumbl, pin, digg, and/or Reddit this article. Let’s get those statistics up.
