Google and Moscow Jewish Museum Unveil Virtual Exhibition
Moscow's most prominent Jewish museum has announced a partnership with Google by launching a virtual exhibit on Russian Jewish theatre
Last week, the main Jewish Museum of Moscow unveiled a virtual exhibition on Russian Jewish theatre in cooperation with Google. The project was launched on a dedicated English-language website that is part of Google’s "Milestones of History" series and is readily available online, according to JTA.
According to a report on the news site Jewish.ru, Google set up the exhibition at Moscow’s Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre. The museum opened in November of 2012 and is the sixth cultural institution in Russia to partner with Google according to the Kommersant newspaper. Speaking to News.ru, Google’s head of programs for southeast Europe, Peter Adamcyzk said that "We believe that we are facilitating a dialogue between our children and our grandfathers and great-grandfathers."
The exhibition includes pictures, posters, theatre programs, and literature in both Hebrew and Yiddish detailing the history of Jewish theatre in Moscow. According to the virtual exhibition, the history of Jewish theatre in Russia began in October of 1867, with the staging of comedies by the Yiddish-language poet Abraham Goldfaden (who died in 1908) in Moscow.
Launching with a cost of $50 million, the Moscow Museum was named Russia’s Museum of the Year in April by the Russian edition of ‘The Art’. Google’s Cultural Institute was launched in 2011.
Google’s co-founder, Sergey Brin, was born in Russian in 1973.
