Skype Investigated for Ties to NSA

The Luxembourg-based freemium video messaging service is under fire for their alleged involvement with the NSA

Over the last decade, Skype has become of one of the most prominent and often used instant messaging services available, ushering in a new era of communication and making video-calls (once a futuristic premonition) a commonplace occurrence.

Purchased by eBay in 2005, owned in part by Andreessen Horowitz and then sold to Steve-Ballmer led Microsoft in 2011, Skype continues to dominate the video-chat market.

Now, the reputable Luxembourg-based corporation owned by Microsoft is facing some negative feedback for the first time in its history, as, according to Guardian report published Friday, they've been linked to the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).

The Guardian report notes that Luxembourg's data protection commissioner is currently investigating the service for violating data-protection laws. If found guilt, Skype could possibly face criminal and administrative sanctions.

Guardian reveals that the information regarding Skype was leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden (of course), suggesting that Skype was one of the many Internet companies which provided secure information and private data to the NSA.

The Guardian also reveals that, after being purchased by Microsoft, they've established a close relationship to the NSA, and that, according to a letter they obtained from vice President Mark Gillett in 2012, they were willing to 'help' law enforcement by allowing them access to video calls and instant messages.

If they find probable cause, the National Data Protection Commission of Luxembourg is allowed to enforce sanctions that would deny Skype the ability to provide the NSA with personal information.

Skype has denied to comment at this time.
