Add another notch to Mark Zuckerberg's belt.

According to GMI Ratings, analyzing profits and salaries of over 2,000 CEO's of publicly traded businesses in 2012, the young social media guru was listed as the highest paid CEO in the United States. And by a huge margin, no less.

The infamous Facebook CEO's over-all recompense for 2012 was about $2.3 billion, which is more than twice than that of the second highest, Richard Kinder.

A huge margin of Zuckerberg's monetary gains for the year come from Facebook's IPO. When Facebook went public, Zuckerberg used 60 million stock options worth nearly $2.3 billion (although a lot of it was used for tax purposes). He also received a salary of $500,000 for the year.

Starting this year, however, he's changed his salary to $1 a year.

Richard Kinder, CEO of energy company Kinder Morgan, was the runner up on this list; his total income this year was $1.1 billion. Many other technically based and software executives made the top 10 list as well, including Apple CEO Tim Cook (with $143 million) and Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff (with $109 million).
