Israeli Defense Company to Unveil Laser Air Defence System
Iron Beam to use high energy lasers in short range missile defense
An Israeli defense technology company, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd., is about to make science fiction a reality with Iron Beam.
The project is a short-ranged air defense system that uses high energy lasers, as if straight from Star Wars or what people suspected that other Star Wars project was.
Iron Beam is to act as a complementary system to the already established Iron Dome, which uses much less futuristic rockets to stop incoming missiles of a distance from 4 to 70 kilometers. Iron Beam is designed for low trajectory attacks like mortars that can slip under the Iron Dome’s defenses.
The Iron Dome currently boasts an 80 percent success rate for incoming attacks.
The Iron Beam uses a High-Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS) designed to irradiate incoming rockets and will apparently be deployed with numerous capabilities. Up until now, most of the project has been kept secret, but more details will be unveiled in February at the Singapore Airshow, according to Defense Update.
“The directed energy component known as ‘Iron Beam’ employs a solid–state laser interceptor designed to engage targets at very short range, below the levels where we currently employ the Iron Dome,” said Joseph Horowitz, Director of Marketing and Business Development at Rafael's Air Superiority Systems Division.“As a weapon system, Iron Beam is designed to have minimal collateral damage, minimal environmental impact and no risk to friendly air traffic around the attacked target,” he added.
