Time Magazine: Israel Is A World Leader in Selfies

The iconic magazine has a released a study of the most 'selfiest' cities in the world, with Israel ranking at #6

Yesterday, on our weekly Startup Club edition, we praised PointGrab, an innovative technology company based out of Hod HaSharon, which looks to forever change how we communicate with our home appliances and devices through its gesture recognition technology.

We also applauded one of its most popular apps, CamMe, which has already won a prize for social innovation; the app, specifically, is geared towards letting its users take the best possible 'selfies' (self explanatory, but if you need clarification, its someone taking a photo of his or her self, usually at arm's length. Having arms like Dhalsim certainly helps).

It came as no surprise, then, when Time Magazine released its study of which cities around the world host residents who take the most amount of selfies, and found that Tel Aviv came in at #6.

I don't know if this is something we should be proud of, or perhaps take this as warning that we're becoming a bit too narcissistic. Either that, or we're just fans of apps and technology. I say it's the latter.

The Time Magazine study finds that Tel Aviv has 139 selfie-enthusiasts per 100,000 people.

The most self-involved city, err... city with most abundance of selfie-users, is Makati City, Phillippines, with 258. Bit of a shocker, actually. Manhattan follows at second, with Miami at third.

“The photos were downloaded from the Instagram API in two sets of five days: from Jan. 28-Feb. 2, 2014 and March 3-7, 2014,” explained Time. “Each day’s data consists of the 24-hour period from midnight to midnight to account for all time zones equally. During that time, 402,197 Instagram photos tagged ‘selfie’ that included geographic coordinates. That only accounts for a fraction of all selfies uploaded during that time, since the majority of photos do not include a location. Of this sample, 28 percent came from the United States.”

I'm not surprised; kudos to Tel Aviv for ranking in the top ten with other Western cities.
