A popular German furniture store chain has create mass outrage after selling vintage-style coffee mugs depicting a portrait of Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler.

The items in question feature a delicate floral motif with the word “Rose” and several other words covering the mug in handwriting. In the background, a black and white postage stamp is pictured with a profile of Hitler, postmarked with a swastika stamp.

5000 mugs were ordered by the Zurbrüggen furniture chain and at least 175 were sold before the “mistake” was noticed and reported to the Neue Westfälische Zeitung in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The German retailer has come forward with an apology, explaining that the “terrible mistake” was caused by “a stupid chain of unfortunate circumstances” starting with ordering from a Chinese supplier, followed by the fact that “no one noticed the problem during unpacking.”

The store’s owner told the newspaper that every customer that purchased the mug would get a €20 gift voucher.
