Interweb crusader Google attempted to purchase music service Spotify last year, but backed off due to asking price, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

The Journal cited an unnamed source stating that Spotify was asking $10 billion while being valued at $4 billion.

Spotify is the world leader when it comes to streaming music online, claiming over 40 million users in 56 countries.

The majority of Spotify users use the standard version of the service, but the company reports that 10 million subscribers opt for the ad-free option.

Google offers its own original music service in their online shop, and purchased the successful music service Songza earlier this month for a reported $39 million.

Songza ia a free online music streaming service that recommends playlists based upon a persons mood, or the activity they are participating in such as exercising or at the office. It has an app for both Apple and Google powered phones.

Features of the music service will be incorporated into Google Play Music and YouTube where applicable.

Google, Amazon and Apple all have music services on a market ruled by Pandora and Spotify.

Apple, for one, made a big move recently by purchasing Beats Music and Beats Electronics (owned by Dr. Dre) in a $3 billion deal. Apple executives said that the Beats buy should be finished by the end of September - but reportedly has several hundred thousand paying subscribers already.
