Business: GetYou

Base Of Operations: Tel Aviv, Israel

Entrepreneur: Dr.Orit Mossinson

Industry: Technology/Social Media

Founded: 2013

The world is all about visuals. From colours of a candybar eliciting a mindset from customers, to the paint in a room telling you how you should feel, the world seems hung up on the physical appearance of, well, everything and everyone. While this can be a good thing at times, inflating egos that don’t need to be inflated, this is also highly problematic.

You might judge someone to be a nerd, a ditz, or on any number of things based solely on their appearance when, in fact, they’re the exact opposite. People get looked over, judged, and stereotyped all based on how they seem to the outside world. This obsession we have with style and looks has become unhealthy, but thankfully some people are looking to change that.

Like Dr.Orit Mossinson, CEO, and founder, of GetYou.

GetYou is a new social app that, according to TechCrunch, is sort of like “Tinder-Meets-Secret-Meets-Flirting Game.”. Much like Tinder, which relies solely on matching users with the photos of people they find attractive, this app also depends on user profile pictures but not to set you up with another person. Instead, the app, which Forbes recently listed in its "25 Hot Israeli Tech Startups" feature, asks randomized and anonymous people to judge you based on your appearance, turning first impressions into an actual game.

According to TechCrunch, GetYou asks you to judge people’s creativity, job, personality, and home-life all based on one photo of a person you don’t know. Everyone’s answers are added up and reflect in your profile as how people “get you” is broken down mathematically; 47% of people find you look smart, 33% of people think you look creative, 12% think you’re a doctor, while 8% think you’re unemployed. It resembles LinkedIn’s endorsement feature, except this one is based solely on surface level information and has nothing to do with performance.

Users of the app who’ve been judged can then ‘friend’ people who’ve given them their scores, while people who’ve been judging are in turn given the correct ‘answers’ about what you do, what you like, and who you are.

As stated in an interview with Dr.Mossinson by Reuters PE Hub, “To date, the only feedback mechanism on the social web is through public comments and likes. GetYou presents a new semi-anonymous platform that will enable our community to give and receive, both by helping us see how others may falsely judge us, as well as showing us how we too can jump to misinformed conclusions.”

The app, which we at Shalom Life tested, is wildly addictive. GetYou asks you to pick six out of nine cards, each with a person on the back. Once you’ve selected the six people you’re going to judge, it then asks you three to four questions per card, revealing the correct answers per photo once you’ve answered all the questions pertaining to it. With each correct answer, you gain points, level up… It’s hard to not want to play this game.

Although GetYou is still a fairly new app, only being founded in 2013, it has already received over $1.1 million, according to TechCrunch, in funding from angel investors (which includes Wix founder Avishai Abrahami) and the VC RDSeed.

With over 1,000 downloads on Google’s PlayStore alone, we expect to see an influx of users getting on board with GetYou. Although the app may have some drawbacks, including insulting people with how you see them or turning into the new Tinder by getting people to hook up based on looks alone, the myriad of good outweighs the bad.

Hopefully....
