Mattel is under fire from the Polish government for their game “Apples to Apples,” in which one of the game’s cards refers to the country as “Nazi Poland.”

The game, in which players select cards and compare different, and sometimes seemingly unrelated things, has a card entitled “Schindler’s List.” The card reads, “1993 Steven Spielberg film. Powerful real-life story of a Catholic businessman who eventually saved over 1,000 Jews in Nazi Poland.”

Although it may not seem offensive at first glance, at a closer look it’s clear why the card is defamatory to Poland. During World War II, Poland never formed an alliance with Germany, nor did they participate in the holocaust. In fact, Poland and its peoples were often subjected to harsh and brutal treatment by the occupying nation over the course of the war. Calling their country during the 40’s as,“Nazi Poland,” however, strongly suggests otherwise.

According to Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna, the Polish embassy in Washington has asked Mattel to pull the game from shelves until the card is removed. He explained in a statement that the wording, “[is] completely inconsistent with the historical truth and detrimental to the good name of our country.”

This is also the second incident in the last week to spark controversy in Poland. Earlier this week James Comey, director of the FBI, made comments which to many felt he equated the roles of Poland and Hungary to that of Germany during the Holocaust.

People often forget that although there were many horrors and crimes committed on Polish soil, that the Polish peoples were also victims during the war. To blame them for crimes carried out on their land by the occupying country is not only unfair, but it attempts to illegitimize the atrocities done towards them during the war.

Mattel has yet to comment on the situation.
