Spielberg and Tintin at Comic-con
Steven Spielberg plans to attend Comic-Con on July 22nd to participate in the “Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” panel. During the panel discussion, he will also be showing clips from the upcoming film.
Spielberg will also be this year’s recipient of the Inkpot- an award given annually to professionally working in comics, animation, science fiction, and other pop culture related fields.
So after countless years working in the realm of science fiction, why has Spielberg decided to show up now for Tintin? Rumours have it that Spielberg and the rest of the production crew are a little worried that Tintin won’t receive a positive response.
Tintin is a Belgian comic that is quite well known overseas, but doesn’t have a large American market. Additionally, Spielberg has filmed Tintin using motion-capture technology, straying from the original style of the source material. Essentially, he’s promoting a film based on a story no one in North America has heard of before, and those that are loyal to the comic overseas will be offended that he’s made so many changes. It sounds like a lose-lose situation to moi.
Deadline points out that James Cameron attended Comic-Con to push “Avatar” while people were still very leery about his concept… and that obviously worked out well for him. Let’s wish the same luck to Spielberg. He plans on making Tintin into a trilogy, but in order for that to happen, the first one has to be well received.
