Cammalleri Heads Back to Calgary
A National Hockey League trade broke out late Thursday night, when the Montreal Canadiens traded forward Mike Cammalleri, their lone Jewish player, to the Calgary Flames.
Cammalleri, 29, had previously played for the Flames in the 2008-09 season, when he scored a career-high 39 goals, 43 assists and 82 points.
However, since joining the storied Canadiens franchise the following year, Cammalleri has struggled to live up to this precedent. Through 38 games this season, he has just 22 points and has never put up more than 50 in a single season while playing for Montreal.
In exchange for Cammalleri, Calgary’s main part of the deal, which saw four players and two draft choices change places, was sending forward Rene Bourque to the Canadiens. Bourque is a two-time 27-goal scorer who had 13 in 38 games for the Flames this season.
“I am extremely excited, I was told I was traded and I wasn’t sure where. I hoped it was Calgary,” Cammalleri told CalgaryFlames.com.
“It’s a place that I have such fond memories, I really have strong relationships with some of the players. I really appreciated playing there.”
Cammalleri is on a short list of Jewish NHLers, which also includes his former Flames teammate, Eric Nystrom, currently a member of the Dallas Stars.
In honour of Hanukkah, Sports Illustrated listed Cammalleri as one of 24 prominent Jewish athletes of all-time this past December.
