Shalom Life is proud to present our 2nd annual ”Top 20 Under 40” list. This list encompasses 20 individuals of diverse occupations and backgrounds from businessmen and businesswomen and innovative entrepreneurs, to philanthropists, entertainers, doctors and more, the list places a spotlight on the myriad of talented, creative and passionate Jews, all under 40, who call Canada home.

Top 20 Under 40- Julian Brass

Age: 28

What makes one notable? Just ask Julian Brass, founder of Notable.ca.

Notable.ca is a digital publication and newsletter that connects young professionals to the most relevant contacts, events, and items of interest in their area. Thanks to a sleek web design, pertinent updates and teams planted across major Canadian cities, Notable.ca attracts thousands of trendy professionals on a regular basis. Typical features include up-and-comer profiles, networking event postings, product reviews - anything a busy young professional would deem “notable.”

“I wanted to create something that driven young professionals could use to advance their work lives, social lives, charity lives, and everything in between,” Brass says. “Notable.ca cuts through the online ‘clutter’ that is prevalent on many blogs and websites to deliver a very well-curated, specific, and relevant experience to young professionals across the country.”

And whom better to know what said young professionals are seeking? After completing a commerce degree at the University of Guelph, Brass spent an 18-month stint at Engage.com, a part social networking, part online dating Silicon Valley start-up site. Upon his return to Toronto, he launched what was then known as NotableTV.com.

That was in 2008. Almost four years later, both Brass and his brainchild are raking in the awards. Notable.ca was named one of Canada’s Top 5 Emerging Digital Brands for 2009 and 2010 by nextMEDIA Banff, and runner-up at KPMG’s Canada’s Next Great Start-Up Competition in 2010. Brass himself was named Entrepreneur of the Year Under 30 by IMPACT National Conference, and is frequently featured in many publications and television programs. This past November, the company launched the inaugural Notable Awards, a sold-out event that celebrated the accomplishments of outstanding young professionals with 500-plus people in attendance.

As if Notable.ca didn’t keep him busy enough, Brass is an extremely active member of the Jewish community. Among his many roles, he served as co-chair of JUMP’s 3rd Anniversary Party and is vice-chair of the Canadian Technion Society’s Generation NEXT. “My Jewish identity is a major part of my life,” he says. “Supporting the community and Israel are things I look forward to continue increasing my involvement with for years to come.”

So what does the young entrepreneur have in store for the new year?

“2012 is our year,” Brass says. “We’ll be working with some of our advertising partners on some extremely original campaigns that my team and I are really excited about. We’ll also be kicking off a few new event concepts that will bring Canada’s top young professionals together.

“As Notable.ca goes into its fourth year, I’ve never been surer that this company truly is something unique.” With the explosive success it’s enjoyed with Brass at its helm, we’re quite convinced as well.
