Mac Miller Being Sued For $10mil… AGAIN
Last month, ‘Blue Slide Park’ rapper, Mac Miller, was slapped with a $10mil lawsuit by hip-hop legend, Lord Finesse, for sampling his work without permission.
Now, Patrick Berlinquette aka Warm Speakers is suing Miller for a second $10mil for sampling his song ‘The World Around You’ on ‘Fuck em All’ from the ‘Macadelic’ mixtape.
Warm Speakers claims that Miller did not seek permission to sample his song that was copyrighted in 2011.
Sampling laws are a hot topic these days, with every genre of music from hip-hop to rock using small tidbits from previously recorded songs. Despite the general consensus that samples can be used (with or without permission), Warm Speakers believes he can win this case.
In Warm Speakers’ lawsuit, he claims:
"[Miller] uses other people’s music because it’s easier, cheaper, and faster than creating his own...."Miller seeks to capitalize on the common misconception in Copyright Law that people whose music he takes have no remedy if he gives their music away for free."
Mac Miller did not think he would need permission to sample the song. In fact, he sent a shout out to Warm Speakers via Twitter earlier this summer.
“Shout out @WarmSpeakers for the song we sample on Fuck Em All,” @MacMiller tweeted.
Perhaps Mac will learn something from all of this… if you don’t seek permission for stealing people’s work, you could be $20mil in the hole.
