Yana Maizel was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, raised in Toronto, Canada, and has spent the majority of her adult life in Granada, Spain and Paris, France. The creator and performer moved to Spain to devote herself to the world of Flamenco. Her new autobiographical show, ‘My Name is Carmen’, answers the question, “How does an actress of Russian heritage become a Flamenco dancer? Must she abandon one culture to fully embrace another?” ‘My Name is Carmen’ follows one woman as she explores the meaning of culture and identity.

“Life would be so much easier if my name were Carmen, then I wouldn’t always be obliged to explain ‘no, I am not from here, but from over there. I feel more as if I were from here than from there, but I’m not from there anymore, and I’m not really from here either. If only my name was Carmen.”

‘My Name is Not Carmen’ premiered in May 2011 at the Festival Dansons Le Monde in Paris, and has since toured Europe. The upcoming dates in Toronto on November 8th and 9th at Jane Mallett Theatre mark the shows’ North American premiere. Flamenco guitarist and singer, Thiago Vasquez, and singer Cristo Cortes will accompany Yana Maizel, actress and dancer.
