Exclusive Interview With the Girls of ‘HAIM’

ASHLEY BAYLEN (AB): Congrats on the success of your Forever EP. Although it only features 3 songs, you’ve accumulated an international fan base and critical accolades. An impressive feat. What do you think it is about HAIM that has struck a chord with so many people?

HAIM: We have great hair. Who doesn't love that!

AB: You grew up playing in a band with your parents. What was that experience like? Did it feel like the Partridge Family?

HAIM: It was something we did for fun. We would play country fairs and street fairs all over California. It was what kept our family together. My mother coined the phrase "Partridge Family of the Millennium"

AB: When you matured, you chose to form another band consisting of mostly family members. How does being siblings effect the band dynamic?

HAIM: We were all in bands throughout high school with friends, and it was never as fun as when all three of us got together and played. Music is just way more fun when we play together.

AB: What inspired you to name the band after your surname?

HAIM: We went through a bunch of possible names, but nothing fit us the way our last name did. The other running contender was The Bagel Bitches, which I was really gunning for.

AB: Does Dash feel like the 4th wheel? Not just because he’s the only guy, but also the only non-Haim?

HAIM: He's changing his name to Dash Haim, so we can make it official.

AB: Can you break down who plays what in the band? The EP includes a lot more than just 4 instruments, so I assume a few members play more than one.

HAIM: We all play drums on the record. Danielle plays Lead guitar, Alana plays Rhythm guitar and keyboard, and Este plays Bass.

AB: Who writes the music?

HAIM: All three of us write everything together.

AB: Who are your greatest musical inspirations?

HAIM: LA Radio

AB: While reading through some message boards, it seems many people were introduced to your music through Jonah Hill’s expressed admiration of your music on Twitter. Have you found that social media has played a big role in getting your songs heard?

HAIM: Yes. We love the interwebz.

AB: When you aren’t writing or playing music, do you spend your free time together? Do you all have mutual friends, shared activities, etc? Or do you lead mostly separate lives outside the music?

HAIM: We share the same group of friends, so we hang out with each other all the time. We're really lucky to have the friends we have. We love going to yard sales together, and Alana does nail art for us at least 3 times a week.

AB: How would your parents describe the 3 of you?

HAIM: It would sound kind of like the part at Passover when you get to explaining the four children.

AB: Any plans for a full-length album in the near future?

HAIM: It's coming! Just you wait!
