Israel’s Oscar-Nominated Film Scores Prestigious Award
“Gatekeepers” Takes Home Berlin’s Cinema for Peace Prize
The prize-winning documentary film, “Gatekeepers”, which is also up for an Academy Award on February 24th, features some eye-opening, compelling and controversial conversations with a number of chiefs of Israel’s Shin Bet security agency, and is the first Israeli recipient of the prestigious award since it was first handed out in 2001.
The film, directed by Dror Moreh, won the Festival’s Best Documentary award in a ceremony at Berlin's Waldorf Astoria Hotel held by the Germany-based Cinema for Peace Foundation, a non-profit which supports films that deal with humanitarian and environmental topics.
The Cinema for Peace Foundation, which is made up of filmmakers and peace activists, was created after the 9/11 terror attacks in New York to shine a spotlight on humanitarian issues and human rights violations through film initiatives. This year’s jury is chaired by the Dalia Lama, and, in the past, Sean Penn and Robert De Niro have acted as Chair, along with many other popular actors.
