Hot, hip, and heady, the next wave of Jewish artists and influencers has already arrived. This is Breakthrough Jew, your weekly showcase of those on the verge of discovery and ready to be a regular figure in pop culture; setting trends, redefining genres, and simply getting it done-whatever ‘it’ is. These days, it’s not enough to know what’s hot now; you need to catch someone when they’re just starting to simmer.

Featuring those in film, fashion, food, and beyond, we’ll find the story before substance is obscured by style, before hype meets backlash, and before talent and purpose gets lost in a maze of Internet chatter. See an artist in the cozy bar before they hit the amphitheater, dine at a chef’s new restaurant before the line begins, and catch a young writer’s work before the demands of ratings and longevity encroach.

Follow our lead and we’ll follow yours – send us tips or suggestions via email, comment below or tweet us @ShalomLife, as we explore the Jewish landscape for pop culture pioneers.

Name: Chase Cohl

Age: 25

Hometown: Toronto

Breakthrough Cred: Young Folk Fashionista Hippie

If you to Algonquin Park in Northern Ontario, if you bring some Rolling Stones music or maybe Pink Floyd, if you get away from the present day, and if you go so far as to roll around in the grass, jump in the water, and lay out at night, you might start to understand Chase Cohl.

A folk singer with a love for nature, a fashion designer with a nostalgic style, and a child with an influential musical father, Chase Cohl is inventive, opportunistic, and seemingly completely at peace.

Born in Toronto, Cohl has been to a lot of concerts – big concerts – in her day, so much so that in one interview she referred to a collection of them as her ‘first 500.’ First, implying there are other sets of 500. She isn’t too good on remembering those early ones though, as she was still a baby, exposed to the entertainment industry by her father Michael Cohl.

The former Chairman of Live Nation, Michael Cohl’s professional career involves simply being one of the world’s biggest concert promoters and organizers, dealing with such bands as U2, Genesis and especially The Rolling Stones. Exposed to great music of a generation before hers, and being afforded the opportunity to explore a career of her choosing and follow her artistic interests, Chase has opted for University, music, and fashion.

Settling in New York City as a young adult, Cohl had the chance to work with some big names in the fashion industry. She interned for the senior fashion editor of Nylon magazine, stylist Kate Young and designer Phillip Lim. With experience and exposure, she branched out on her own.

Littledoe was launched a few years ago as Cohl’s fashion foray was realized; it began more or less as an accident. Her flair for style, in particular her various feathery headwear, became popular with her fellow young and hip scenester friends. She passed them out as gifts at first, but these items soon gained attention and popularity, and requests were sent to Cohl for more.

From the demand grew her company, which in addition to her famed headdresses, offers various accessories and clothing, all unique, all specially crafted. It’s not only feathers or floral headbands, but too hats, lingerie, crystal accessories, and also a wedding line. Littledoe, tapping into the ‘natural beauty of this world,’ references a lake from her favourite place in the world, Algonquin park, ‘a reminder of the simplistic things in life.”

Her products are whimsical, inspired by the natural world with a nod to Native American aesthetics. In an interview she described one headdress as ‘very Pocahontas.’ It’s a homage, she assures, an inspiration.

Having lived in two of North America’s biggest entertainment and fashion capitals, Chase has moved to a third, but all the more embracing her love of nature and nostalgia. Leaving her SoHo loft, she is out in Los Angeles, where the sun shines brightly, her designs are not regulated by changing seasons, and she hangs out alone in the tepee in her backyard.

While it’s unlikely you’ll get a chance to see her in her cozy pad, you can probably catch Cohl instead up on stage. She is a folk singer and songwriter, comprising one third of the indie band, Weepaw. Cohl will play the guitar and sing, while the other two band members, her brother Liam and friend Duncan Davies, assume the bass, as well as the mandolin, ukulele, parrot, banjo and tambourine.
