Iron Man 3 Surpasses The Avengers Opening Records
‘Iron Man 3’ earns $195.3 in 5 days
The hugely anticipated follow-up to Marvel’s superhero series, ‘Iron Man 3’, was released internationally just five days ago and has already accumulated nearly $200 million in 42 countries.
The Robert Downey Jr led blockbuster earned $195.3 million, which includes openings in Europe, Asia, Australasia, and South America. Last year, ‘The Avengers’ earned $185 in the same amount of time.
‘Iron Man 3’, following the adventures of billionaire superhero Tony Stark, was expected to due well, but Disney is shocked by the “magnitude”.
''The surprise is the magnitude of this opening, not necessarily that audiences are responding to the movie. We believe this to be a strong indication of what will lead to extraordinary word-of-mouth worldwide,” Dave Hollis, Disney’s distribution executive, told Variety.
''As people start reading headlines of the size of this opening, I suspect it will act as a catalyst for the Thursday night opening Stateside.” Hollis continued.
‘Iron Man 3’ has yet to open in the United States, Canada, Russia, Germany, China, and several other major markets. The film is expected to break the records of all it’s predecessors (‘Iron Man’, ‘Iron Man 2’, and ‘The Avengers’), and is currently on course to open with $120 million in the U.S alone.
‘Iron Man 3’ opens in North America on May 3rd.
