‘Spiderman’s’ Andrew Garfield Joins New Martin Scorsese Film
Garfield will star in ‘Silence’, a film about religious persecution in 17th century Japan
Andrew Garfield is confirmed to star in Martin Scorsese’s next film, ‘Silence’, an adaptation of a 1966 novel by Japanese author, Shusaku Endo.
According to Variety, Garfield will play the role of a Christian missionary searching for his mentor in 17th century Japan. ‘The Last Samurai’ star, Ken Watanabe, also appears in the film as Garfield’s interpreter.
Scorsese has been trying to get ‘Silence’ made since 1988. The director has reportedly had difficulty getting funding due to the strong theme of religious prosecution. After 25 years, the financing is finally in place, and the film will begin production in June 2014.
Garfield is currently shooting ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’, which is expected to be premiere next May, while Scorsese recently completed ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and Matthew McConaughey, which is set for a November release.
