On Tuesday, Microsoft surprised fans with an exciting announcement: ‘Jurassic Park’ director, Steven Spielberg, has partnered with them to create a live-action television series based on the Xbox first-person shooter franchise, ‘Halo’.

‘Halo’ developer, 343 Industries, and Microsoft previously created a web-series entitled ‘Forward Unto Dawn’ to complement the release of 2012’s ‘Halo 4’. This would mark their first full-length television series. The project is part of Microsoft’s general push to establish Xbox as an all-in-one home entertainment device, planning to apply a game development model to producing original TV-style programming such as movies, sitcoms, live events and digital shorts, according to NBC News.

The partnership with Spielberg was announced at a live event, with Bonnie Ross, 343 Industries’ studio head, sharing that she looks forward to combining “the storytelling magic of television with the interactive innovative of Xbox One.”

Spielberg could not attend in person, but did share his excitement about the TV series from an off-site location digitally.

"For me, the Halo universe is an amazing opportunity to be at that intersection where technology and myth-making meet to create something really groundbreaking," Spielberg said.

Joining Ross on stage were Microsoft’s entertainment and digital media president, Nancy Tellem, and Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business president, Don Mattrick, who concluded the announcement by saying “we’ve welcomed Steven Spielberg to the ‘Halo’ universe’.
