Internationally renowned Israeli author, Amos Oz, has been awarded the prestigious Franz Kafka prize in the Czech Republic.

The annual award is presented by the Prague-based Franz Kafka Society to authors who “appeal to readers regardless of their origin, nationality and culture.”

An international jury decides on the winning author, who receives not only the award itself, but $10,000. This year’s jury included German literary critic, Marcel Reich-Ranicki.

Oz, who is an outspoken novelist, journalist, and professor of literature at Ben-Gurion in Beersheba, has been a prominent advocate for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 1967. He has received numerous awards prior to this one, including the Goethe Prize, the Prince of Asturias Award in Literature, the Heinrich Heine Prize, and the Israel Prize.

The Franz Kafka society revealed in a statement on Monday that Oz will travel Prague in October for the ceremony to accept his prize.

Previous winners of the Franz Kafka award include Philip Roth, Elfriede Jelinek, and Harold Pinter.
