James Franco Discusses Playing “James Franco” [VIDEO]
The 35-year-old plays a variation of himself in the apocalyptic comedy, 'This is The End'
Multihyphenate James Franco is known for his penchant for a plethora of creative pursuits. In fact, oft times it’s difficult to keep track of his myriad of endeavors – the guy has 11 films coming out in 2013 alone. One of said films is the comedy, This is the End, written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
Based on the 2006 short comedy, Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse (also written by Rogen, Goldberg, and Jason Stone) the film follows Franco, Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Emma Watson, Michael Cera and other celebrities all playing variations of themselves, as they face an apocalyptic scenario in Los Angeles.
“We’re playing extreme versions of ourselves, and I would really only trust Seth and Evan to depict me in an outrageous way. Their take on me is funny – of course, I don’t think I’m really like that, but yes, it’s a version of me (laughs), it’s their version, and it’s funny,” Franco told Flicks and Bits.
“I think like all their movies, even going back to Superbad, they put in this level of heart or connection between the characters that grounds the comedy. So I figured out, ‘Alright, maybe my character is like really obsessed with Seth Rogen.’ I wouldn’t say that I’m obsessed with Seth in real life (laughs), to the point where I make paintings to win his love. But I do love Seth, and over the course of my career…. really from the first thing me and him did, Freaks and Geeks, to now, he’s been there at important points in my career,” he continued.
This is the End hits theaters on June 12th. Take a gander at the trailer below.
