Proud New Yorker, Billy Crystal, Raises $1 Million For Hurricane Sandy Relief
The ‘Monsters University’ star is doing whatever he can to rebuild his hometown on Long Island
Billy Crystal, the man responsible for comedic masterpieces ‘City Slickers’ and ‘When Harry Met Sally’, can now add philanthropist to his already impressive resume.
On Saturday, the ‘Monsters University’ star announced a gift of $1 million to the city of Long Beach to help rebuild the shore community ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, while standing on a newly installed patch of the town’s boardwalk.
According to Newsday, $112,000 of the donation comes from Crystal’s family while the other $888,000 is coming from funds raised at the annual Celebrity Fight Night fundraiser in March, an event that traditionally raises money for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute and other charities.
“This is the first time they have diverted funds from Parkinson’s research,” Crystal said of Ali, while speaking in front of hundreds of beachgoers on the weekend. “To help out Long Beach.”
“Janice and I though $888,000 is a great amount of money, but a million sounds a lot better,” he said, referring to his wife.
While visiting his hometown, Crystal also shot a commercial for Long Beach.
Long Beach officials are expecting the new $44 million boardwalk to be completed by mid-July.
