“I‘ve always pursued what has interested me,” added Moranis. “I come up with things that I throw out there, and it’s the hope that people will share it and that there will be an audience.”

The reception so far has been positive, as it’s the number one comedy album on Amazon and Top Ten on iTunes. As important though, the album was well-received by Moranis’ close friends and family.

“It was much to my surprise, because I thought some of the people might find some songs mildly offensive,” said Moranis of its reception.”Everyone loves everything, I’m relieved. There were a couple people in my family I had in mind who take Jewish practice, Jewish ritual a little more serious than others, and some of the ideas might have crossed the line, but it didn’t turn out the case.”

Songs like the saucy ‘Kiss My Mezuzah,’ or ‘Asian Confusion,’ a track about ordering take out that has the line, “it’s the only thing Chinese God likes to make in the U.S.A.,’ are perhaps too off-colour for some. Other songs, like the titular track, a lovely and genuinely humourous song about a mother’s delicious home cooking, is both specific and universal.

The album cover speaks to the scenario described in the song, and seems rather representative of the rest of the pieces. Moranis had asked his mother to prepare a brisket for family dinner, and have a photographer shoot the scene for the cover. The idea was proposed two months before the shooting, to take place on Labour Day. At the last minute, Moranis’ daughter asked his mother to change her outfit.

“It’s my daughters favourite clothing that my mother has,” explained Moranis of a wardrobe that seems remarkably similar to the tablecloth on the cover. “It looked like it was all one fabric.”

Having released the album, Moranis has no idea what is next in store for him, nor any desire to get ahead of himself. He would consider a live tour, but there would be much that needs to fall into place.

“I have no idea whether those possibilities will present themselves,” he said. “I’ve really been enjoying songwriting for the past several years, and I’m still doing it. I don’t know where the record business will be, what will happen with this record, but I would like to continue song writing and song production and do what I always do.”
