“I drank more coffee probably in the last week than I have in the past several years of my life combined,” explains an exceptionally busy Daniel Radcliffe as he orders a coffee with milk. We’re sitting in a restaurant at a luxury hotel late in the morning in downtown Toronto amid a festival that finds Radcliffe in three different films.

Introducing himself with the utmost friendliness and humility, saying, “Hi, I’m Dan,” Radcliffe has returned to Toronto for TIFF, promoting the fantasy-horror Horns, the romantic comedy The F Word, and the historical drama Kill Your Darlings. Radcliffe is excited by the diversity and trials of his varied roles, and seems to not want to stop working at all.

“I like the challenges, seeing what I can do, seeing how fast I can switch between jobs,” says Radcliffe, who’s three films were shot within eight months in 2012 between England, Dublin, Toronto, and Vancouver. “I loved the challenge of doing a 17-hour day; it’s tiring yeah, but a lot of fun.”

In Kill Your Darlings, Radcliffe plays a young Allen Ginsberg, the poet of the Beat generation who, while socializing with artists and discovering his own powerful emotions, was associated with a notorious murder. Shot across 25 days in April 2012, Radcliffe then had the summer to prepare for a pair of particularly opposed back-to-back productions.

“I was worried about going from the F Word to Horns,” says Radcliffe. The former is a film about two friends (Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan) who try to transition to a more serious relationship. Horns, meanwhile, is a vanguard selection that finds Radcliffe’s character awaking one day sporting a pair of devilish horns, given special powers, and accused of the murder of his girlfriend (Juno Temple).

“In one I’m playing myself, and in another I’m playing someone very, very different,” he adds, and while he doesn’t specify, it’s the Horns character that is the one less familiar. “I’m big about preparation, making sure you put the work in before…it’s the only way I can go to sleep at night.”

“Before I went off to do The F Word, I did a load of preparation [on Horns], worked with a dialect coach, broke down the script, put it back in my mind to know I had done it.”

Radcliffe was thankful that the first scene shot in Horns was relatively similar in tone to what he had done in The F Word. “[Director Alexandre Aja] kind of gave me a break. We started with just me and Juno doing sweet, simple, romantic scenes; he gave me a little run in.”
