Natalie Portman Hints at Female Superhero Movie
The ‘Thor’ actress reveals that Marvel might have a female-centered superhero film in the works
The rumor mill has been churning out quite a few stories over the past year, mostly since the release of ‘The Avengers’ speculating that Marvel would soon be developing a female-led superhero film. ‘Thor: The Dark World’ star, Natalie Portman, has now added fuel to the fire, suggesting during a recent interview that said film is already in the works.
"There are definitely many strong women, but it will be exciting when there is a central female character which I think is coming – I have heard is coming," she told UK site Sci-Fi Now.
But which character would the film feature? The options being considered in the comicsphere are ‘The Avengers’ Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson), She-Hulk, Wonder Woman, and Captain Marvel (a.k.a Ms. Marvel).
Portman didn’t specify, but she did comment on the already strong female supporting characters in Marvel’s superhero films, presumably referencing her own character, Jane Foster, as well as ‘Iron Man’s’ Pepper Potts and ‘Captain America’s’ Peggy Carter.
They do definitely have strong female characters in them, and I think it’s a testament to the people who run Marvel - their respect, their just normal human respect for women, the way they want to characterize them. You can tell when men talk to you, as just a person or as a 'woman.'"
Portman also suggested that Marvel would soon release a superhero movie with a non-white main character.
"And, of course, also a central non-white character will also be exciting. Title characters," she said.
Catch Portman as Jane Foster in ‘Thor:The Dark World’ on November 8th.
