REVIEW: ‘Family Guy Live’ at Toronto’s JFL42

MacFarlane isn’t afraid to be dirty, be daring, and almost always be dancing.

While the songs were inventive, that Henry remark and the other similar off-the-cuff moments were most hysterical. Green’s lines as the awkward son Chris probably elicited the most roars, but that’s because he nearly screamed the dialogue out of nowhere, leading MacFarlane to comment and break character.

To his credit, MacFarlane only a couple times screwed up his lines, as he had to alternate between Peter, Stewie, and Brian, who were often talking to each other. In his defense, MacFarlane was a part of nearly every single act of the night, and his enthusiasm and love of performing glistening through everything he did.

So the show bounced around, comical yet incoherent, no more apparent than in the last thirty minutes. The third act concluded with a round of applause, but no special fanfare. The evening, though, continued with some more songs, including MacFarlane singing along live with animation playing on screen. He warned the audience that this exercise was an experimental one – but that same can be said for an entire showcase that was just as random as the cartoon itself.

A question and answer period proved most experimental, and for the most part, a failure – unless one considers a train wreck a success. Some questions were booed by an aggressive audience, while one woman, shamelessly promoting something or other and then asking an absurd and irrelevant question was chastised by Borstein who quickly remarked, “the better question is, who the **** cares?”

The group was getting told that their time was up, but they kept going with no one exactly on the same page. Hoping for a final question that would be universally accepted, one was asked, and the crowd roared as a quick answer was offered, a quicker goodbye was said, and the evening came to a close.

That was the first of two shows that evening. This writer thoroughly enjoyed a show that certainly was not for everyone, and sure to surprise some who may only subscribe to specific parts of MacFarlane’s wide repertoire of comedy and entertainment styles. Still, in everything he does, MacFarlane isn’t afraid to be dirty, be daring, and almost always be dancing.
