Television production company Gaumont International Television has just announced they are developing a series based on King David to be directed by Wolfgang Petersen.

The director is no stranger to stories from the ancient world, having Troy in his filmography, so hopefully the series will do justice to such an important figure in human history.

The NeverEnding Story director sees plenty of potential in the character and wishes to chart David’s rise from his victory over Goliath to his troubled reign as the King of Israel. Television, says Petersen, is particularly suited to "bring one of the oldest, greatest epic stories to life in television, where the story can truly breathe," according to Variety.

To help out, the series has brought on Joan of Arc writer Ronald Parker and producing director Roger Young, of Rome fame.

Ever since the incredible popularity of HBO’s fantasy television series Game of Thrones, television creators have been clamouring to bring heavily serialized, far-reaching shows to other networks. Shows like the Canadian-made Vikings have experienced both critical acclaim and relatively large audiences, so producers have begun looking to characters like Ben-Hur, Cain and Abel, and other characters for potential properties.

Of course, a story like David’s is long and intricate, and Petersen agrees that he is "one of the most complex, ambitious, conflicted and deeply human figures in world history." No news yet on potential networks, but the Gaumont has shows currently airing on ABC, NBC, and Netflix.
