Gene Simmons: Dying Doesn’t Make Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse Music Icons

Legendary KISS front man, Gene Simmons, may have initially made a name for himself through numerous rock hits and clownish makeup, but in recent years, his offensive comments have been more newsworthy than his lyrics. After calling Muslims “vile” and claiming that Michael Jackson was a child molester, Simmons is now insisting that music icons, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse, are not in fact, icons at all.

While speaking with Team Rock Radio, Simmons rattled off a long list of qualities that a person must possess in order to be considered a Simmons-approved music idol. He is confidant that a rock musician has not earned icon status since the 80’s.

"Kurt Cobain—no, that's one or two records, that's not enough. Amy Winehouse—that's one or two records, that's not enough. What, just 'cause you died that makes you an icon? No, no," Simmons begins.

"Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and just on and on. And through the '70s—Aerosmith, Kiss, Led Zeppelin."

"Now from 1984 until today, name one superstar that's bigger than their music, and not just somebody that's recorded one or two records, but another Queen or another AC/DC? None, you can't name one."

Well, I think we can begin to name several, including Cobain and Winehouse, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion, we suppose.

What do you think? Are Winehouse and Cobain music icons? Who else would you consider an icon over the past few decades?
