And we’re off, to anywhere and everywhere, as we say ‘Shalom’ every week to different global travel destination. World cities, provincial towns, and even the most unassuming of suburbs are infused with Jewish history and culture, some of which is waiting to be discovered.

For the pious follower, the curious traveler, or the intrepid adventurer, we’ll unearth the best of what to do and where to go. Be it an emerging subculture, a historical landmark, or simply a triumph of art in any form, Jewish experiences are found around the world; and likely as well in your backyard.

It may be in the destination, the journey, or the company, but there is much to uncover and celebrate near and far, so hurry up and get going.

Shalom, Nepal

The Jewish population in Nepal is quite small, consisting mainly of diplomatic officials and Chabad staff in the capital Katmandu, and also in Pokhara. Nepal and Israel established diplomatic relations 53 years ago, in 1960. Likewise, it is one of the most popular travel destinations for Israeli tourists.

Each year, Katmandu hosts its famous Passover Seder, which has the distinction of being the largest seder in the world. In 1989, the Israeli embassy in Kathmandu hosted a Passover seder for travelers from Israel. The event was so popular, that the embassy couldn’t accommodate everyone in attendance. The Nepalese army pitched a massive tent, and the American embassy lent their tables for the event. Seeing that the Kathmandu Seder proved such a success, the Israeli embassy contacted Chabad for assistance.

Today, the Passover Seder is hosted by the Chabad House of Kathmandu, located in the Thamel district. Thamel has been the tourist epicenter of the city since the 1960’s, complete with budget hotels, trekking outfitters, and as of September 2011, a full Wi-Fi zone. The Chabad House in Kathmandu provides a myriad of services from a synagogue and kosher restaurant, to Bar/Bat Mitzvah instruction. The Chief Rabbi of Chabad in Nepal is Chezky Lifshitz. In 2007, Chabad established a second house in the city of Pokhara, with Rabbi Lifshitz acting as remote director.

Long considered to be the gateway to the Himalayas, Nepal has drawn generations of climbers, backpackers and budget travelers alike. That said, if adventure trekking is something you would want to include in your itinerary, choose a reputable trekking agency. Shai Treks & Expedition Ltd has offices in both Kathmandu’s Thamel district and Pokhara, and is popular with Jewish travelers.

Swissa Agency also has offices in the Thamel district and Pokhara, and is most popular with Israeli travelers. Staff with both outfits speak Hebrew fluently, and cater to kosher and Shabbos needs. Accommodations are plentiful in Kathmandu and Pokhara, with everything from luxury hotels to inexpensive hostels. Take a look at for instance, at Trip Advisor’s most recommended hotels for Kathmandu and Pokhara, respectively.

Although the mountainous northern portion of Nepal contains 8 of the world’s 10 tallest mountains, including Mount Everest (the highest point on Earth), the country does boast varied terrain and ecosystems. The southern region of Terai, for instance, is humid and fertile with tropical rainforests that contain an abundance of wildlife habitats.

Nepal is a nation of awe-inspiring natural beauty, coupled with the welcoming nature of the Nepalese people, it is definitely a place not to be missed.
