Jake Gyllenhaal’s method acting on the set of Nightcrawler has resulted in multiple stitches to his hand and a visit to the hospital after punching a mirror while shooting an emotional scene.

"During the shooting of the scene his character (purposefully) banged his hand into the mirror," Gyellenhaal’s representative tells US Weekly, "Unfortunately the mirror broke and Jake's hand was badly cut up. He got numerous stitches at the ER and was released. He already returned to set for work."

The accident is said to have occurred after a grueling 18-hour work day and the scene in which Gyllenhaal required medical attention afterwards was reported to be very intense.

“The scene was emotionally charged and his character was talking into a mirror and he got so into it, he banged his hands against the mirror and it broke and cut him,” a source reports to PEOPLE, "It was all the scene and not because he was mad about anything else."

It appears Gyllenhaal is wiling to go to great lengths for the role of Lou in Nightcrawler. In addition to the bloody hand, he has also lost a substantial amount of weight,

During the 17th Annual Film Awards on October 21st, Gyllenhall addressed his shockingly thin appearance by telling US Weekly that "It takes place in a land where I think there is a desert in a lot of ways, great opulence, and at the same time, great vastness and emptiness. I knew that [Lou] was literally and figuratively hungry, [So] I was always a bit hungry."

“There was really no technique,” He tells US Weekly in regards to his sudden weight loss. “I just love this movie”.

Gyllenhaal explained his extreme weight loss of 50 pounds for the sake of “Lou” to E! News, stating his need to feel hungry in order to align himself with the NightCrawler character.

"I can only approach things from a mental place," said Gyllenhaal, who had previously buffed up and gained muscle for Prince of Persia, "Like, I'm playing a character who's hungry, figuratively and literally, who's driven in ways to do things and succeed at any cost. And I think that defines a generation in a lot of way so I wanted to get their mentally and then have it transform me physically, because I am not one to rely on science as much as I am on just sort of instinct. That's sort of the character."
