In today’s age, it is quite clear that social networking has become ingrained in our daily lives. With all of our thoughts and ideas thrown out on the interweb constantly, it comes as no surprise that quite a few celebrities have tackled social media and flourished. A great example of this is Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, otherwise known as the semi-retired WWE champion, The Iron Sheik.

Previously a professional wrestler, The Iron Sheik now commands a Twitter following of over three hundred thousand, proving he is just as menacing using only one hundred and forty characters as he is with his famous camel clutch hold. On any normal occasion, The Iron Sheik is generally the kind of celebrity you would hesitate to poke fun at for fear of being the recipient of the camel clutch hold, but surprisingly he has been the focus of many roasts, including the most recent at Toronto’s Royal Cinema.

Hosting the Roast of the Iron Sheik were Magen Boys Entertainment, twin brother duo, Jian and Page Magen. In addition to running an entertainment company, both brothers are huge fans of The Iron Sheik, and have been managing him for several years.

The Iron Sheik with Page Magen

To Page Magen, The Iron Sheik’s presence in social networking made him the perfect candidate for a roast. After the success of the Sheik’s sold out roasts in both Los Angeles and New York, the Magen brothers decided to bring him to their hometown of Toronto.

“The Iron Sheik is like one of my favourite people in the world. I’ve been his manager for about 8 years. He has been an inspiration and a very popular person and a popular opinion online socially. He always speaks his voice and he’s not afraid to dish it, so he’s not afraid to take it and we did this in two of the most famous comedy clubs in the world- Caroline's on Broadway in New York City and The World Famous Comedy Store in Los Angeles and both shows were sold out. So the response was amazing, it was humongous. People involved were like David Arquette, Louis C.K was at one of the shows, Jeffrey Ross – so there’s a real respect for the art of roasting and a certain person that was kind of able to embrace taking that kind of punishment was the Iron Sheik. We’re from Toronto - and, you know, the Sheik loves Toronto - and said what better place to do it than the people we live with, that are family and friends,” Page Magen explains in a quick interview before the roast of The Iron Sheik.

Page goes on to further explain that bringing the Roast of The Iron Sheik to Toronto is only the beginning. Magen Boys Entertainment intends to be closely involved with introducing and producing more comedy in Toronto.

“Well I think that there’s a big pull and that comedy is so wide. It’s not just comedians. There’s podcasts, there’s sketches – there’s so many different styles of comedy right now and we feel like we’ve got a real big pulse because we do a lot of work in LA and New York and we’ll have an inside tip of whose the next up and coming or who’s the right person who’s doing really good and we feel like we have the proper dynamics and understanding to do this.”

In regards to the Roast of The Iron Sheik, Magen admits that arranging the event, along with gathering and organizing the talent wasn’t easy at all. However, he does point out that the majority of the panel of comedians enlisted for the roast were all very big fans of The Iron Sheik.

“When you hire one comedian, you fly one guy in, you grab one microphone and then they show up, they do the show and they leave. When there’s a roast, there’s 12 people on stage, 12 different attitudes, characters, personalities – people that just have different styles – and our job was just to blend and mix so that everyone had a little bit of something to bring to the table. We handpicked the best people – not just locally, but actually in North America to be part of it. It was an honour because they loved the Iron Sheik – it was an honour for them to be chosen, it was an honour for them to be a part of it and it wasn’t a hard sell. They said do you want to be a part of this roast and they’re like, man all I’ve been hearing is that this show selling out all over the states, of course I want to be a part of this roast.”
