James Franco is being considered to play the lead part in an upcoming Gus Van Sant film about the life of Michael Glatze, a gay activist who renounced his sexual orientation following a health scare.

Glatze, after developing worrying heart palpitations that resembled a health condition of his father’s, turned to fundamental Christianity for support. Prior to renouncing his sexuality and becoming an “ex-gay”, he was the founder of Young Gay America magazine and toured the United States filming a documentary about gay teens.

Franco, who is currently in Broadway’s Of Mice and Men, should be comfortable taking on this role, having several gay roles under his belt including Milk (2008) with actor Sean Penn, as well Howl (2010) in which he portrayed Allen Ginsberg.

"It’s not like it’s my mission to tell the stories of as many gay men as possible, although in some cases, I think it is the point," Franco told The Daily Beast last fall. "I guess that a lot of the figures that I love were gay."

The film is expected to cost Gus Van Sant a whopping $3.5 million dollars to produce. Van Sant is looking to start shooting sometime this summer, in the month of July.
