TJFF Announces Highlights from 2014 Festival

With the Toronto Jewish Film Festival (TJFF) less than a month away, organizers have announced a slew of movies hitting the big screen as part of this year’s 10-day fest. From high-profile flicks starring the likes of Woody Allen and supermodel Bar Refaeli to documentaries about local and international figures, TJFF’s roster is quite eclectic.

Among the list of talked-about films is The Pin, a World War II romance that’s considered the first Yiddish movie to come out of Canada. Another buzz-worthy flick is German Doctor, Argentina’s official Academy Awards submission for 2014. Other notable films include Marvin, Seth and Stanley featuring Alex Karpovsky (HBO’s Girls) and Fading Gigolo, which stars an all-star cast rounded out by Woody Allen, Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara and John Turturro.

TJFF’s documentary selection includes the world premieres of The Outrageous Sophie Tucker and A New Life on the Land, which delves into the storied history of Canadian Jewish farmers. Other documentaries include Lionel Bart: Reviewing the Situation and Comedy Warriors: Healing Through Humour (featuring appearances by Zach Galifianakis and Lewis Black).

The festival will also be honouring Jewish Iraqi-born documentarian Joe Balass. In addition to his latest project, The Length of the Alphabet (about Montreal author Naïm Kattan), the retrospective is slated to show some of Balass’s earlier award-winning films, including Nana, George & Me and Baghdad Twist.

As per usual, TJFF will be boasting a wide selection of Israeli films. This year’s roster features Hunting Elephants, a comedy starring X-Men’s Patrick Stewart about a 12-year-old boy who teams up with residents of his grandfather’s seniors home to rob a bank. Other talked-about Israeli movies include Eytan Fox’s Cupcakes and the espionage thriller Kidon, featuring Bar Refaeli and veteran actor Sasson Gabai (The Band’s Visit).

The annual festival is set to spotlight Jewish-themed horror with a range of projects dating back to the 1960s. They include Roman Polanski’s The Fearless Vampire Killers, God Told Me To (directed by Larry Cohen), the TV movie Dybbuk and the X-files episode titled “Kaddish.”

The festival kicks off May 1 with the French drama 24 Days. For tickets and more information about the festival, visit TJFF.com.
