Outspoken comedienne, Roseanne Barr, is being sued for a tweet (that was later deleted) from over two years ago.
In March 2012, George Zimmerman fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida. While Zimmerman claimed self-defense, the incident created an uproar internationally with many believing the shooting was racially motivated and intentional.
Roseanne Barr was one of Martin’s loudest supporters, taking to social media to demand answers, justice, and the arrest of Zimmerman.
Prior to Zimmerman turning himself into the police, he was believed to be hiding out at his parents home. At this time, Barr posted the home address on her Twitter account. She later deleted it, but not before writing "If Zimmerman isn’t arrested I’ll rt his address again- maybe go 2 his house myself."
Zimmerman’s parents are now suing Barr for over $600,000 in “emotional distress damages”.
"Robert Zimmerman and Gladys Zimmerman were forced into hiding by the disclosure of their address and have not been able to return to live in the house since the initial tweet ... it was an open and obvious call for vigilante justice and [was] intended by Roseanne Barr to cause a lynch mob to descend on Robert Zimmerman and Gladys Zimmerman’s home," states the complaint filed by Zimmerman’s parents in March.
According to the lawsuit, Zimmerman was not living in his parents home at the time of Barr’s tweet.
"Robert Zimmerman and Gladys Zimmerman suffered emotional pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of the capacity for the enjoyment of life, incurred additional living expenses due to the inability to live in their home and have suffered a loss in value of their home," says the complaint.
“These losses are permanent and continuing in nature and Robert and Gladys Zimmerman will continue to suffer these losses in the future."
Barr has yet to publicly comment, but a court document filed by her lawyer last week asks the Zimmerman’s for an itemized list of damages.
