Woody Allen's 'Bullets Over Broadway' Stage Production is a Flop

A Broadway production based on a popular Woody Allen film will be closing its curtains after only five months on stage.

While the production Bullets Over Broadway opened earlier this spring (April 10) with a lot of potential, the musical flopped tremendously. Although Allen himself played a large role in the creation of the musical, it reportedly did not even meet audience expectations.

"With a book by Allen (based on the screenplay he co-wrote with Douglas McGrath) and direction and choreography by Broadway favorite Susan Stroman ("The Producers"), "Bullets," which opened cold on Broadway without an out-of-town tryout, came into the 2013-14 season riding a wave of strong buzz from previous industry readings. However, critical reception didn't match the hype, and although box office showed promise early on in the run, sales and attendance have tapered in recent weeks," wrote Variety.com.

The production, as well as the preceding film, is centered on a playwright who finds himself in the dangerous company of gangsters during the production of one of his plays. In 1995, the film staring John Cusack, Chazz Palminteri and Jennifer Tilly, actually earned Dianne West an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. One would think an Oscar winning film would make a big splash on the Broadway stage.

The production of Bullets Over Broadway will have until August 24th, the day of its' very last performance at the St. James Theatre.
