28-year-old Lena Dunham already has quite a few accomplishments under her belt. In addition to her indie cult film ‘Tiny Furniture’, her award-winning HBO series ‘Girls’, and her recent memoir ‘Not That Kind of Girl’, Dunham is also pursuing adapting a YA favorite into a feature film.

While speaking with author Ariel Levy during the 15th annual New Yorker Festival on Friday night, Dunham opened up about her interest in Karen Cushman’s ‘Catherine, Called Birdy’.

“This is actually my first time talking about it publicly… I’m very excited about it. I’m not sure when it’ll happen, but I’m in the process,” Dunham explained.

For those of us that weren’t pre-pubescent in the mid-90’s, ‘Catherine, Called Birdy’ follows 12-year-old Catherine as she comes of age in 1290 England.

"[She] gets her period and her father basically says, 'Well, it's time for you to get married,' and she's like, 'Uh, no,'" Dunham shared.

"But it's hyper realistic and really pretty and it's full of incest and beatings, but it's a child's story. I've been obsessed with it since I was a kid."

"It's a really interesting examination of sort of like coming of age and what's expected of teenage girls…I'm going to adapt it and hopefully direct it, I just need to find someone who wants to fund a PG-13 medieval movie," Dunham continued.

Dunham plans to produce the film through her production company with ‘Girls’ collaborator Jenni Konner called A Casual Romance.

This isn’t the first time Dunham has expressed her interest in Cushman’s book. In 2012, she listed ‘Catherine Called Birdy’ and Vladimir Nabakov’s ‘Lolita’ as the two best books she’s ever read about young girls.
